By having a better understanding of why a dog barks, you will be better equip for training the dog when it is appropriate and when it is not.

Reasons for Barking:

1. To Alert or Warn
This type of barking is typically encouraged by dog owners, as it lets us know when something is wrong or if someone is coming. In cases where the bark is low in pitch and combined with growling, is a sign fear or aggression. It is vital to know the difference between an aggressive bark and a normal bark. You may want your dog to alert you when there is a person at the door, but you do not want your dog to fear and be aggressive towards every visitor.

2. To Get Attention
Barking for attention is especially common for puppies, but can become quite bothersome as they get older. Puppies are helpless and require some assistance, but as they get older they may think they have you trained to get what they want with their barking. Who is training who here? Maybe this is the kind of barking you wish to curb and why you are looking into bark control collars.

3. To Show Excitement
When you are happy you sometimes want to share it with the whole world. Dogs are not any different in this manner. The more active they are in the fun they are having, the more they may bark. This is not necessarily a bad type of bark, but can be a problem if you live in a quiet neighborhood that wishes it remain so. It is ok to teach your dog to quiet during playtime, as this will not diminish the fun they are having. If this is the only time you are experiencing a problem with your dog’s barking; it may prove to be convenient for your dog to only wear the bark collar during play time.

4. To Self Identify
Perhaps you live in a place with more than one dog and have noticed that when one starts barking, the others will join in. This is just a dog’s way of communicating with other dogs, a way of saying “I’m here too!” and the chorus of dog’s barking can be heard by everyone in your community. This can be quiet annoying for your next door neighbor and especially irritating to your neighborhood if your dog is the loudest in the bunch or the one who usually starts it. This behavior can also be corrected.

5. To Show Displeasure
Dogs will also bark to show displeasure. If you are running late for your, you may be in such a rush that you do not have time to walk the dog or maybe it slipped your mind to refill the food dish before running out the door. Dogs are also very social creatures and may experience separation anxiety when you are away. If you are running late getting home from work, you are not able to call your dog and explain. When upset, the dog may act out with barking. With enough proper training, this kind of barking can also be avoided.

6. As an Outlet of Energy
For those with a more active breed of dog, may notice that their dog barks more than others. This type of excessive barking might just be an outlet for pent up energy and a way of telling you that they are bored. Providing your dog with more activities can help decrease this kind of barking when you are home, but won’t teach your dog that this behavior is unacceptable. By teaching the dog that this is not acceptable, your dog will learn patience and may find better ways to not be bored.
